Rare Native Copper Stone Slice from Historic Phoenix Mine, Michigan

A piece of Michigan mining history, over 100 years old! This cut and polished slice comes from the Phoenix Mine, Houghton Township, in Keweenaw County, Michigan. The Phoenix Mine was a prominent Copper mine operating during the mid-to-late 1800's which produced an estimated 17 million pounds of copper ore, including some fabulous collector specimens. Despite the large quantity of copper ore extracted from this location, it was not economically viable and ceased operations in the late 1920's. 

This specimen features lustrous Native Copper crystals with gorgeous crystal twinning. The Copper crystals appear like branching, elongated feathers, criss-crossing in luscious golden orange tones throughout the stone. A clear-coat has been applied to the top of the stone to protect this incredible piece of mining history.
