Sikhote Alin Meteorite

A meteorite from a witnessed impact! The Sikhote-Alin meteorite fell in Southeastern Russia on February 12, 1947. Witnesses in the area saw a massive fireball fly through the air, with material from the impact site later recovered. 

It is very unusual to both see a meteorid and recover fragments from that same meteorite. The estimate of the size of this meteorite was around 26 metric tons, some estimates believe it was closer to 100,000 lbs. Due to the size of this meteorite, abundant specimens were recovered, which is why they are often slightly more affordable than other meteorite specimens. However, the majority of material from this location is considered “mined out”. This meteorite is classified as an iron meteorite, group IIAB with a coarse octahedrite structure and a composition of approx. 93% iron and around 6% nickel.
