Feel the power of the ancient seas in this unbelievable pair of Fossilized Coral from Florida. Soft pillows of Chalcedony crystals contrast perfectly with the darker Quartz banding lining this incredible crystal and fossil combination. The impressive size and quality of this fossil pair is truly outstanding. Typically, with fossils from this locale, sections of the coral fracture or break away during the cutting and polishing process, making extra large pairs of this quality truly rare.
The bubbly clouds of crystalline Chalcedony feature lovely white, cream, golden and blue color tones. A small pocket of crystalline drusy Quartz can be seen at the top of one of the sides. If the botryoidal Chalcedony crystals weren't enough, the opposite side of the coral pair has incredible detail showing where the colonial coral polyps once lived.
Dated at approximately 20 to 40 million years old, this variety of coral lived during the Eocene to Miocene Period. Empty voids within the coral were naturally replaced with silica-rich mineralization in the form of botryoidal Chalcedony and Quartz. Fossilized coral like this specimen was once part of the ancient coastline of Florida. This fossil was collected pre-1960 in Tampa Bay. The fossil was cut and polished down the center, with the exterior left in its raw and natural state to show off the natural growth structure of this variety of colonial coral.
Dimensions of Each Single Side: Approx. 8.5" H x 7" W x 3.5" Deep
