Teal Banded Agate and Quartz Geode Slice

This teal banded agate slice comes from southern Brazil. It features a vibrant color and natural drusy Quartz crystal center. Agate is a variety of silica with cryptocrystalline (very tiny) quartz crystals. The stone has been soaked in a teal dye solution which allows the agate to absorb the colorations. The agates formed within air pockets of hardened lava. Silica rich fluids flowed through these air pockets and began to cool and harden. Layer upon layer of silica built up within the pocket, creating beautiful bands of the mineral Agate. The top and bottom of the rock has been cut and polished to a high gloss finish, while the edges of the stone have been left in their raw state. This piece could be displayed upright or lay flat as a decorative coaster.
